How To Safely Store Your Firearm For An Extended Period

If you need to place your firearm inside of a storage unit, you need to first make sure that you rent the right type of storage unit. Once you have rented the right type of storage unit, you need to clean up your gun in order to get it ready for storage.

Rent A Climate Controlled Storage Unit

If you know you will need to keep your firearm inside of your storage unit for an extended period of time, you should try to rent a climate controlled storage unit. Climate controlled self storage units will allow you to keep the unit at a consistent temperature and protect the items inside of your unit from the fluctuating temperature outside.

The metal in your firearm may corrode if it is left inside of a non-climate controlled storage unit for an extended period of time.  If you want to protect your firearms, it is worth the investment to rent a climate controlled storage unit.

Clean Your Firearm Thoroughly

Before storing your gun, you need to sit down and take some time to clean it properly. Make sure you wipe off any dust or debris that is on the gun. You should also use high quality oil to polish the wood on your gun. This will seal the wood and help your gun survive its time in storage.

Remove All Ammunition From Your Firearm

You should never store your gun with ammunition inside of it. To start with, most storage units to do permit you to store ammunition inside of your storage unit due to the risks involved. Furthermore, storing your gun with ammunition inside of it can degrade the condition of your gun while it is in storage.

Take Your Firearm Apart

You should set aside a little bit of time to disassemble your gun before you place it in storage. A dissembled gun will last longer than one that is stored whole. When you disassemble your gun, you relieve the tension on the springs and other moving parts inside of your gun. This will extend the life of your firearm.

If you have a storage case for your gun, you can put all of the pieces inside of the case. If you do not have a case, you can wrap up each piece with a cloth and place all of the pieces inside of a labeled cardboard box.

Once your firearm is cleaned, emptied of ammunition, dissembled, and safely stored inside of a carry case or labeled cardboard box, it is ready for storage. Inside of a climate controlled storage unit, your firearm will be safe for a long time. If you plan on keeping your firearm inside of storage for more than a year, it is a good idea to stop in and check up on everything in your storage unit at least once a year.
